He didn’t really understand why someone would want to go to a cemetery for a birthday party, but hey, maybe Will was a bit of a weird kid.
“Hey Will.” Mike called, his voice gentler than he had ever heard it.
He whipped his head around, scanning the rows for another figure, desperately looking for Will. It didn’t really click until Mike stepped forward and knelt beside a grave, placing his perfectly imperfect cake in front of a well-kept headstone.
Oh.
Will Byers is dead.
So how the hell did he end up stuck haunting Mike Wheeler's basement?

Summary
For a long moment, it's quiet. Dustin's chest is heaving with the force of his words, and Will is… standing there, looking shell-shocked, with that barely disguised look of hurt that Dustin once swore he would never, ever inflict upon him.
"...so you think this is my fault?" When Will does speak, it's quiet, the words barely a whisper. Dustin's heart aches at the sound, but not enough to tamper the seeds of anger still sprouting in his chest.
"Think?" Dustin laughs mirthlessly. "Isn't it obvious? Somehow, for some reason, you're the root of everything we've been through. We've all thought it, we all know it, but nobody's been heartless enough to bring it up with you because they're all too busy coddling you instead. Tough luck, Byers, spending all this time being worried about me when you could've been taking some fucking responsibility and actually helping us put a stop to what you started."

Summary
Mike is no stranger to a little moral ambiguity, and mind reading is far more harmless than burying a body without telling anyone. So he dives in. Will smiles at him, and Mike prompts his brain to figure out why.
He finds nothing.
This is… odd.
OR
Mike gets telepathic powers randomly, three years after Vecna’s defeat. He tunes into people’s thoughts, expecting every guy’s mind to be like his. When he finds surprisingly few gay thoughts about best friends, he’s forced to re-evaluate and see if maybe it’s just him? (it is.)
It doesn’t help that the one mind he wants to read the most seems to be set to a different frequency entirely.

Summary
So Will waited patiently, erasing and going over a part of the sketch on his notebook. Should an arm bend that way at that angle? Maybe he could get El to help be his reference-
“Do you think I’m hard to love?”, came tumbling out of El’s mouth.
Will’s eyes had snap to El, who had gone eerily still.
“Like there’s…something wrong with me. Like I’m…I’m broken.”
Oddly, he felt that kinship again. He knew what it was like. Will knew what it’s like to feel different. He knew what it's like to feel undeserving of love. He knew what it’s like to want to be loved.

Will and El, and a late night conversation about how to say 'I love you' without saying it. Sort of a character study, sort of not. They just really understand each other, even if in some ways they want something the other has. Set before the events of Stranger Thing Season 4, in Lenora.
