Shane and Ilya haven’t spoken to each other since they broke up over a misunderstanding at the 2017 All-Stars game. Ilya was traded from Boston to LA and they both tried to move on. But, in December of 2019, when Ilya ends up on injury reserve, he decides to make an unannounced trip to Montreal. He could have never foreseen the global pandemic just around the corner of that decision, and as the world crumbles around them, they find themselves isolated at the cottage for the longest offseason of their lives.

What happens when the systems you have carefully built to keep yourself hidden and emotionally regulated are no longer available to you? What happens when the identity you built your life around becomes the thing you must let go of? What happens when isolation exposes the truth about yourself and everyone around you and there’s nowhere else to hide? What does Shane do then? What does Ilya do then? What ripples does that create beyond their relationship? What shape does their life become when honesty is no longer optional?

Shane’s mind was whirring: he needed to remember that Dillon was weaker on his left so Shane needed to make sure to guard him there. He needed to let Ilya kiss him in front of everyone. Haas was fast enough to fill gaps on the right, but he was also a little insecure sometimes so Shane needed to help bolster that. Shane was supposed to let Ilya hug him in front of everyone. If Ilya noticed Shane was freaking out, he didn’t say anything.
Set at the beginning of pre-season practice during Shane's first season with the Ottawa Centaurs, this story explores Ilya and Shane's mental health struggles, the many changes happening in their relationship in the last few months, and the language barrier between them.
