Summary
He lays down on his bed, staring up at the ceiling before a feeling constricted in his throat, like a snake coiling. Dazai sits up, pressing a hand to his chest. Dazai had experienced many things, but this was different. He sat up, trying to catch his breath as if he had been heavily running. While the coiling may have been sudden, the aftermath of its kill wasn’t.
The feeling slowly dissipates, and Dazai swallows. Something was wrong. Something was different.

If Dazai is anything, he is a perseverer. A stupidly incredible one, at that. Big deal if he passed out after taking a nasty blow. Mori will patch him up and he’ll bounce back in a few days like this was all but a ‘whoops, how silly of me!’ moment.
But he realized after he called for back-up and took Dazai’s pulse like the practice demanded that… no.
He’d… overestimated Dazai’s alleged perseverance.
Or: Dazai refuses to breathe. Chuuya has plenty of say in that matter.

He didn’t say it out loud, but Dazai knew that Ranpo knew—knew what Dazai thought he deserved. Knew Dazai believed that not being left to piece himself back together after being wrecked and stripped down to nothing was for people, and Dazai wasn’t a person anymore.
Just a fucked thing. A used thing. A pet to be set down when the game was over.
But Ranpo never set him down.
Ranpo wrapped him in soft things and whispered praise and razors in the same breath like nothing about him was shameful.
or: it hurts. that’s why it works. that’s the only time dazai can stop being a person and just be a thing—the only time his awful, black hole of a head will ever shut up.
