Summary
Gale was close enough to see Astarion’s nostrils flare as he took in a great, deep breath, chest heaving with the effort. His scarlet eyes gleamed in the moonlight, open so wide and staring with such rapt attention straight into his own. Through him. It made Gale feel small. And important, maybe.
Sometimes Gale has impossibly big feelings and the only way he knows to cope is with endless rumination and denial that basically amounts to sticking his fingers in his ears and shouting. Such a coping mechanism may prove inadequate for dealing with the walking, talking, plucked-from-his-guilty-conscience fantasy that is Astarion. And it doesn’t help that Astarion has a smile that makes his heart sing, along with being, probably, the first real friend he’s ever had. (Tressyms excluded, of course.)

Summary
Astarion is kissing Gale into his mattress, and yet somehow, he’s the one who feels smothered. Gale is hard; Astarion can feel the press of it, right against his hip. But all Astarion needs is a little more time, surely. Then his frazzled nerve endings will settle down, and he can actually focus on enjoying Gale’s—
“Astarion,” says Gale, reaching up to cup Astarion’s cheek in his palm. His hand is warm. “Are you all right? Should we stop?”
Astarion could just lie. But then, he actually likes Gale. Because Gale is like this: never pushing further than Astarion wants to go. Never expecting more than Astarion wants to give.
If only Astarion could just figure out what it is that he wants.
Astarion and Gale find an intimacy that works for them.

Astarion's interest in soft, wealthy, foolish Gale of Waterdeep is entirely practical: make Gale want to keep Astarion safe, no matter what Astarion has to trade away to do it. Gale of Waterdeep's needs are far less carnal than Astarion expects. Somehow that only makes it more complicated.
Or: Astarion underestimates Gale's willingness to let Astarion play pretend at being a vampire lord.
