    Summary

At some point during one of their hotel room chit-chat sessions, Alina had extended her finger and asked if they could pinky promise that they wouldn’t let the outside world get between them ever again, biting her lower lip and tugging at the corner of it. She looked like a thirteen year old boy working up the nerve to ask his crush to a school dance. It was sweet and mildly endearing, enough to pull a hearty laugh out of Evgenia, one that Alina echoed with a nervous, breathless chuckle.

Zhenya had carelessly hooked the offered finger. Added a small, sealing kiss because she was warm and happy and they’d just spent hours watching the men’s free skating together, belly-laughing while tearing the boys apart.

She’d meant nothing particular by it. She was just being pleasant. She was always pleasant. Surely, Alina wouldn’t think much of the significance or veracity of such a juvenile, meaningless thing. (Clearly, now, Evgenia knew she had. Clearly, Alina had stashed it somewhere else entirely.)

    Summary

Everyone remembers Beijing.Everyone remembers the medals, the headlines, the chaos that unfolded in front of the cameras and the people watching.
But beyond the scores and the podiums lies a story few have bothered to ask about the story of the one who stood on top, the one whose silence was taken for strength, and whose pain was left to fade quietly into the background.

She was the longest standing member of Team Tutberidze, the skater whose resilience (#sherbspowerofwill) carried her further than anyone expected. Yet behind the scenes, away from the arena, she was left alone and unseen, and unbearably dismissed. Abused in silence, burdened with expectations, her suffering was overshadowed, her trauma forgotten, replaced by newer scandals and new tragedies. She became the least talked about, though arguably the one with the heaviest story to tell.
This fic is drawn from real events, timelines, and fragments of truth I’ve gathered, but it is still a work of fiction. Many of the relationships and personal interactions have been imagined for the sake of the narrative. Please assume that everything here is fictional, even when it feels close to reality.
