Pain is a language Simon speaks fluently.
He was born in it, from it, in a world that bites more often than it barks. He knows the cold burn of the knife, the strangling twist of the rope, the sickening crunch of the bone.
He knows pain. This is different.
This is not the discordant singing of damaged nerves, nor the dull throb of crushed tissues trying to heal.
This is reality unravelling. This is him unravelling, his very soul being unmade and remade, over and over again. Shattered and then glued back wrong.

Simon survived the Eel and the Eye, only to reimprisoned as soon as he was pulled out, subject to the whims of scientists who seek answers in his biology. Now, Ava's dumped him into the custody of a new scientist, separate from the COI, a complete unknown. He's learned better by now than to hope.
Dr. Ryland Grace is pulled from his peaceful life on Erid to retrieve a specimen from the COI, an organism mutated by prolonged exposure to the blood ocean of AT-5

Summary
After two years working in the Research & Development Unit at the Los Angeles Shatterdome, Doctor Ryland Grace is close to a breakthrough on a bioweapon, one they can deploy against the kaiju on the newest Jaeger in the PPDC--the Hail Mary. Everything nearly falls apart when the lab--and the intended pilots of the Hail Mary--are destroyed by a death cult of ecoterrorists calling themselves Eden, who see the kaiju as divine retribution for humanity's sins. Grace doesn't think he'll be tapped to be a Ranger, and doesn't want to be, but when the second set of pilots die in another attack, he's called upon. His copilot? Brother Simon Butcher, the only survivor of the Shatterdome attack. They'll have to learn how to work together; the world is counting on it.

Summary
Simon has to come to terms with a lot of things very quickly once they approached Erid, a major setback for sure, but anything to bring Grace back from the brink of death is a sacrifice he will make in a heartbeat. Rocky is stuck in-between helping Simon handle the surge of Eridians, his own mate especially, coming in and out of the Hail Marry to conduct their studies for the humans' best chances at survival, along with aiding in building them a lab and home on Erid's surface, and a means for bringing the Taumeba to their new planet. Grace... Well Grace is barely lucid as he is poked, prodded, and kept alive by Armondo as he awaits his first successful dose of nutrients along with a very long road to recovery. This brings in Adrian, Rocky's mate, a head molecular scientist. Who although may have dreamed of alien contact other than that blasted Astrophage, was not prepared for it to come in such a troubling, harsh reality of frail, leaky, space blobs with very different issues she has to navigate very, VERY delicately. Something that is in short supply in such a crisis between both the humans and the panicked Eridani colleagues who care not to spend precious time learning the humans.

“Is the alien…dangerous?” he asks slowly.
“No! No, no he’s my friend, he’s - uh, well, the engineer of the Hail Mary,” says Grace. “Look, I’m just saying that - he’s gonna wake up soon, and we don’t need to tell him about how our first meeting went. We can gloss over the whole ‘tackle me to the ground and scare the daylights out of me’ thing. I won’t tell if you won’t.”
Simon is 90% sure this is going to come back to bite him in the form of blackmail but he nods anyways, because it sure as hell sounds like Grace is implying Simon will be allowed to stay a while longer.
Rocky sleeps through the absolute shitshow that is Simon and Grace’s first meeting. It’s probably for the best.
