    But it’s a plan, nonetheless. Over the summer of 2014, they tweak it and add things important to the both of them. There are even many, extensive, contingency plans.

    Knowing Ilya would be home any minute, Shane hastily splashes water on his face, slapping his cheeks lightly, hoping to wash away some of the weariness and bring some color back to his cheeks. He chokes down two ibuprofen, hoping they’ll blunt the pain enough to keep the night from unraveling.
    Then, steeling himself, he heads back downstairs, ready to pretend everything’s fine. Because tonight, it has to be.
