    The alien looked up and caught his eye, then quickly glanced away. Lex felt like his lungs were curling up and withering away in his chest and his heart squeezed so tight he thought it might explode. He turned away sharply, exhaling deeply through his nose. Whatever. Who cared what he thought, how he felt, who he loved. He wasn’t even capable of love, not really, not in the way human beings were. Yet staring at him out there, smiling and laughing and holding onto a woman he looked at with such adoration in his eyes, Lex had to admit, even if it was only to the sad, vast recess of his mind, that perhaps Superman knew more about what it meant to love and be loved as a human than he did.
