Summary
“Can I kiss you?” he asks. Hearing the words out loud makes everything feel that much more real, and Mike loves it. He thinks he might love Will, too, and the thought doesn’t feel new. It’s like a stone that’s half buried in the dirt but just got kicked loose. It’s something that’s been deep in Mike’s heart for a while, years, maybe, but just got unearthed.
Will pushes him away, and Mike has no idea what he did wrong. He was just telling the truth. Friends don’t lie. “What?” Will asks, voice sounding kind of choked. He’s grimacing, and Mike wants to un-say whatever bad thing he said so that Will smiles at him again.
“I— I asked if I could kiss you,” Mike says, and Will shushes him. He looks around frantically.
“Mike,” Will replies. He sounds tired. “You can’t just ask that.”
“Why not? I want to kiss you so I asked.”
“But you don’t, Mike. You don’t want to… to kiss me. You’re just drunk.”

“It’s not real, you know,” Ted’s voice echoed in his head—a tinny, rhythmic drone. “It’s not love, not romance. It’s a sickness.”
Mike almost moaned in relief once the door fell shut behind him, the peaceful quiet of his home surrounding him. He dropped his bag on the floor and crossed through their small apartment, already knowing where he’d find the one he needs. There he was—Will Byers, in all his glory.
Mike Wheeler has a really bad day thanks to Ted Wheeler, Will helps him feel better :)

Will sighs and reaches over to turn the radio down even quieter.
“Ok for one, stop staring at my mouth,” Will says.
Mike glances over at him automatically.
Will laughs. “See? That’s exactly what I mean. You’ve been doing it for years, but now it’s like…it’s a lot, Mike. People are gonna notice.”
“But I wanna kiss you,” Mike whines.
It’s been a week since Mike and Will got together – one blissful week, like a honeymoon before the wedding. Now they’re in Montauk for Joyce and Hopper’s, surrounded by friends and family, and trying to fly under the radar. Somewhere along the way, Mike realizes he doesn’t want to hide anymore.

Will splutters. “Say what?”
“Like we’re what, Will? Say it. Why do I make your boyfriend so nervous?”
“You’re being a jerk.” He looks down and picks at a loose thread on his sweater.
Mike is being a jerk, but he’s just tired. And Will is here in Mike’s car in the middle of nowhere, protected by the growing darkness of the evening, and goddamnit, Mike wants to hear him say it. He wants to hear Will say Mike isn’t better.
Or: Mike and Will have been Mike and Will for sixteen years. Mike is not going to Will let someone else ruin that.
