“Oh,” is what she lands on, and Tim rolls his eyes.
“Don’t sound too excited for us,” he says, deadpan, but despite his teasing tone he’s still on cloud nine.

Angela’s smile went crooked. “Carefully.”
She reached for the door panel, paused, and looked back at them. For the first time since they’d appeared in the parking lot, her expression was unguarded. Warm. Fond. A little amazed.
“For what it’s worth,” she said quietly, “you turn out okay. Both of you.” Her gaze flicked between them, lingering just a beat longer than necessary. “Better than okay.”
Lucy’s chest squeezed. “Do we… stay friends?” she asked. It felt ridiculous, but the question tumbled out anyway.
Angela’s eyes softened. “Oh, honey,” she said. “You have no idea.”
