To enact his perfect plan, Tong set up everything so that he could be with Pae. The right character just needs to be pushed in the right direction, which all ends with Pae falling into his arms. If he were to be honest, Tong is just speeding up the inevitable and giving the audience what they want. The story had been told before. The crazy girlfriend broke the innocent boy's heart, and a knight just happened to be there to pick up the pieces.
