Summary
Steve and Tony become friends, then co-workers, then roommates. Just a story about these two people figuring out how they work best together.
I don't know it all yet, either! We'll find out together.Bookmarked by TrolleyWood

Sunk Cost Fallacy: An unhinged rant to future me to quit while I’m ahead.
I remember DNFing this because something was bugging me despite the normal AU expectations, but curiosity over the ending got the better of me. Now realize that feels so OOC because the characters have been bastardized to the point of being unrecognizable personality-wise. Replace Tony and Steve with Jerry and Dave and you have the exact same story. If I went into this knowing that it was an OC novel using recognizable names, I would have been less frustrated expecting the characters I know and love to finally show up. They did not.
Skimmed the updated chapters as an OC wattpad-esque romantic comedy and came to the following conclusions to remember:
Jerry deserves better and Dave is a plot device that is the epitome of drama for the sake of drama with zero substance or growth. The story contradicts itself in a way that makes it feel like the whole middle section is a waste of time. And I'm pretty sure there were originally less chapters planned when I first started reading, but it really dragged itself along like a dying animal towards the end. At points it feels like the author is speaking through the characters to insert some meta justification for the choices they made or possibly in response to some comments. It was very strange and made the story feel* so disjointed at times.
Jerry and Dave as OCs are only tolerable in a vacuum. Jerry has that manic pixie-puppy energy. Going back to what the story is “supposed” to be, he doesn’t really even resemble any version of Tony Stark. He is Jerry. And honestly what does Jerry see in Dave? Aside from being attractive? Jerry will list things he likes about Dave, but Dave never actually shows any traits worth liking. He’s like a plank of wood –with a hole for Jerry to eventually stick his dick into– that cries woe is me all time. Not even in the typical martyr or emotionally repressed way either, but almost to the point of coming off as incompetent and helpless? It’s almost like his personality is uke coded. I hate that I know that. Also, if that is who the author thinks Steve Rogers is- from what media are they basing his personality off of? I love subby bottom Steve but I only have so much disbelief to suspend. To be fair, the author isn’t bad at creating OC characters**. I appreciate the voices of Jerry and Dave even if the story and the characters themselves aren't for me. When I wasn’t trying to shove them into Tony-and-Steve-shaped holes I genuinely thought some moments were sweet. I really wanted to like the story as something original, but the overall narrative didn't hit. What in the fun house mirror was that ending.
NEXT TIME -EVEN IF THE PREMISE IS INTERESTING- IF THE CHARACTERS AREN’T EVEN RECOGNIZABLE AND THE PLOT LOSES ITSELF -> JUST SAVE YOURSELF THE TIME YOU’LL NEVER GET BACK. You love Steve/Tony, but this ain’t it fam. Go read a palate cleanser and pray for Jerry.
*Keep an eye out for that when looking for new fics.
**Don’t even think about it, future me. It will only end in more disappointment. I’ve already checked -

Summary
Tony hadn’t been a cruel man, but he had been a practical one.
Or: In his twilight years, concerned about how his slow-aging possibly-immortal husband will adjust to his death, Tony builds an AI version of himself that he updates nightly, intending for it to keep Steve company after he’s gone. When the inevitable comes to pass, Steve doesn’t know what to make of the AI or whether its presence lessens his grief or makes it significantly worse.
He’s leaning towards the latter.
