And perhaps, were he not a foreign fugitive, he would have gladly given himself over to any plan she made for him. As it was, he had nothing to offer her.In Duvos, perhaps he could have kept her. A general’s wife was a comfortable, safe, well-fed position. His salary would easily pay for any of the fineries that he was certain she wanted nothing to do with. But at least there he would have a salary to offer her.
