Summary
It’s difficult to place when Yashiro, the Daughter of Ashes, began her rule. Some say she rose to the throne recently, still feeble and uncertain despite her cheery demeanor. Others claim that she was far older, already a steady presence and guiding hand in the times of their forefathers. No one really knew. However, she was a kind and fair leader, so no one paid it any mind.
What they did take note of, however, was the company she kept. Lurking past the royal garden walls, there were whispers hidden in the alleys and shadows of curiosity of her closest consorts being creatures of darkness and twilight. Allegedly, it was a palace of luxury, decadence, and death; the inhabitants living lavish lives full of intrigue and peaceful cohabitation, but nevertheless, lives that should not be. This is all just speculation, of course. No human outsiders have ever been allowed in.
That is, save for the most recent addition to her majesty’s royal guard: the second son of the esteemed Minamoto family, Minamoto Kou.
