After the Fourth of July shift from hell, Robby assigns Dennis one last task before leaving on sabbatical: keep an eye on Jack Abbot. Dennis Whitaker and Dr. Robby have an arrangement.
After a little slip-up while on the job, Dr. Robby becomes aware of Dennis's situation. He can't afford the expensive price tag that comes with blood bags, and he can't remember the last time he's had a proper meal. Who would Dr. Robby be if he didn't lend a hand to his favorite vampire? Besides, it benefits both of them in more ways than one.
He stumbles into Dr. Robby's house, drained and painfully desperate for a meal after a long shift. Instead of Dr. Robby waiting for him, he finds Dr. Jack Abbot.

“Look kid.” Dennis hates when Robby calls him that. Or at least when Robby does it to try and emphasise their age gap. It could be hot if Robby didn’t actually treat him like a kid. Like he is right now. “I’m flattered honestly, but you don’t want to date me.”
Dennis barely contains a scoff. Crossing his arms he straightens, standing as tall as possible. Their height difference really doesn’t help Dennis, not when Robby is literally looking down at him all the time. “I wouldn’t have asked if I didn’t want to, Robby.”

Dennis had been more than happy pretending to be a Beta. Patches were expensive, and he always felt bad when he slipped a few from the hospital supply. But the momentary guilt and a rash or two were a small price to pay to avoid being an anomaly among his peers. The fact that he got away with the deception for so long was a miracle in and of itself. It was only a matter of time before something like a massive patch recall managed to throw a giant wrench and an inconveniently timed flash heat in Dennis' life.
With nowhere to go and no idea what to do, Dennis was forced to accept Dr. Robby and Dr. Abbot's kind offer to wait out his heat in their spare room. And hope that the massive crush he had on the two Alphas didn't make a mess of everything.

Oliver had heard of the flower coughing disease before. Or hanahaki, as it’s best known. The first case was found in Japan, who knows how many years ago, where the person affected had flowers growing in their lungs. Symptoms included extreme coughing fits that wouldn’t go away, watery eyes, tightness in the throat, and many other inconveniences a person with a plant in their respiratory system might have.
Unrequited love. Completely illogical and medically improbable, but there it was.
It didn’t take him long to realize who his unrequited love was. After all, there was only one person who occupied his every thought.

Summary
It isn't love, this desperate need for Felix to breathe that claws through Oliver. It isn't love, the shaking relief he feels when Felix starts breathing properly again, and Oliver carries him as far as he can, screaming desperately for a doctor. If their lips meet when Oliver is trying to make sure Felix is breathing, it isn't love. It isn't love but, for a moment, Oliver feels as if the only thing keeping him alive, keeping him sane is the warmth that remains in Felix’s body - the steady, if erratic, thump of his heart beneath his hands before the ambulance arrives.

Or: Oliver realises he's thrown in the towel too early and there must be more than one way to get to Felix.
The maze scene goes differently and Felix survives. However, not all the Catton family members are so lucky to make it through the summer and as Felix returns to Oxford a changed man, Oliver will be damned if this doesn't bring them closer together.

Felix gets fun little fixations every once in a while. There was that time he memorized every English monarch in order, but then promptly forgot when he started studying tattoo artistry. He was able to tell exactly what brand and vineyard a red wine was from, but that skill dulled once he read all of Shakespeare’s works and started writing character essays.
Now, it just so happens that Felix can not, for the life of him, stop thinking about what Oliver’s skin feels like. Tastes like.

He didn’t want to burden anyone else with this newfound addiction. He thought he could do this alone; buying a sex toy online and waiting by the front door until the mailman came, just so his father wouldn’t get to it first and open it to reveal a surprise, masturbating at least four times a day, going to Jungle a least once a week in the skimpiest clothes he has to grind up against someone, anyone.
