Summary
The Hail Mary is launched to a distant star, leaving two men alone to grieve the loss of their youngest brother. One believes he is the last of his siblings left alive, and the other must decide if revealing himself would only cause more grief.
A man wakes to find himself on a ship approaching near-lightspeed towards an unknown destination. The last thing he remembers is blood, the all-encompassing fear of dying alone, and voices asking him what he'd give to survive. He thinks the ship is empty — until he finds one man left alive among a three-person crew, still in a coma.
Another man wakes and cannot remember his mission, his past, or how he got on this ship. Even without his memories, he has the strangest sensation that the crew member who woke before him isn't telling him everything, which makes it a lot harder to decide what's real.
And then they meet an alien.
On Earth, a girl named Claire gets really into quantum mechanics.

Summary
Ryland blinked. The world swam.
A face. Above him. Backlit by the gray afternoon sky streaming through the shattered window, features shadowed and impossible to resolve into anything coherent. Strong jaw. Blue eyes sharp, looking at him with an intensity that should have been frightening but wasn't, somehow. Wasn't frightening at all.
Court?
The name surfaced from somewhere deep and buried under years of carefully constructed normalcy. The face above him blurred and shifted in his failing vision, and for one breathless, impossible moment it was him. Older, harder, scarred in ways Ryland's memory didn't account for, but him.
Oh, Ryland thought, with the strange, floating calm of someone who understood they were dying. You came to get me.

Summary

”Get to work Dr. Grace. The world is counting on you.”
Stratt turned around and with a wave of her hand another man had walked over, “You’ll be remaining here with Dr. Grace. I trust you can keep him out of trouble.”
“Shouldn’t be a problem.” The other man’s voice was smooth, and if Grace was hearing correctly it almost sounded like there was an undercurrent of mirth.
That’s when it clicked, was Stratt siccing a babysitter on him? “Hold on! What trouble are you thinking I'm going to get into?” Should he be offended? He was a grown man, he’d worked in countless labs before and sure he’d had some questionable outcomes but they’d just let him be the first scientist to study an alien life form! They should have more trust in him than this!
”Everyone in the world wants to get their hands on astrophage. Simon is here to protect you from them.” Stratt explained, turning again to give Grace an exasperated expression. “I should hope you don’t need constant supervision from yourself Dr. Grace.”
