“Ugh, you are so boring, moy lyubimyy!” Ilya yelled back affectionately, since he really couldn’t physically be any other way when talking to his husband.
Ruby knew it was a side effect of what it took for them to be together. When you are denied something for so long that most other people take for granted, you only become that much prouder and grateful that you have it. Whether it be the family that Shane provides for Ilya, or just the simple act of being together, it didn’t come easy for either of them, and that sticks with a person.
It might be corny to say that they were sorta Ruby’s heroes.
Or, what growing up with Shane and Ilya as her uncles was like for Ruby Pike.

Shane wrinkled his brow. "Don't call it an affair," he said, reflexively. "That makes it sound like we were cheating. And no, no comment."
"I will comment," Ilya said. "It is ridiculous."
"I'm sorry," Shane said, his brain just now catching up to the second half of the question. He really hated the word "affair." It had distracted him. Too much, apparently. "Did you say something about my stats?"

Or: Shane had no intention of giving the press any information about when he and Ilya started hooking up. Ever. It was so thoroughly nobody's business.
But what was he supposed to do, just let people be wrong about his stats?
