The winter here, on Hoth, was perpetual. There was a tension brewing amongst the locals, not uncommon to planets of the Outer Rim. But something in their reticence to Jedi help told Viktor something else was coming, and this boy they’d found out in the desolate wasteland rang like a death knell to Viktor’s ears.
”Besides,” his master continued, “the boy’s mother is gone. The villagers have already declared him a lost cause, and will turn him over to the military when they arrive at the end of the week. He is a Force user, what else could we do besides take him, teach him, and bring him up alongside his kin?”

Whitaker couldn’t say why, but having Dr. Robby’s attention on him was exhilarating, specially thrilling when it came with praise after a patient was out of danger. Something inside him lit up, warmth spreading through him, when Dr. Robby smiled at him in that way he seemed to reserve only for his 4th year medical student. No one else, not Javadi, Santos, or even Mel got that kind of smile out of their attending.
It was only for Whitaker, and that made him feel special.
