However, some miscommunication (and being kidnapped by a queen goddess) leads him to have to explain himself to his supposed girlfriend and friends when he just isn't ready to talk about it. -

Percy looks at his father for the first time in the entire conversation. And he asks something he’s been wanting to know since he was 12 years old. “You were born a god. Did you lose the ability to care, or did you never have it in the first place?”
It’s a genuine question, too. Percy wants to know. He wants to know whether the gods cared once, but grew apathetic to the world around them as it continually changed and they stayed the same. Or maybe, they have never understood what it is like to care, just like they have never understood what it is like to die.
