"It hit Will suddenly, how much every time Mack asked him for something it meant he loved him. How often Mack had to be vulnerable for Will to know what he needed. He told Will what he wanted, let Will see that soft part of him that was allowed to be cared for, told Will he loved him unprompted, while Will had had to choke on the words so many times before he could get them out, no matter how badly he wanted to say them. Mack had thrown the doors to himself open for Will, even though it had been so much harder for Will to do the same."
Will surprises Mack for his birthday, and somehow that becomes a reason for Will to realize he can want things.
