Summary
“Don’t steal him from us. We were talking!” Maddie says to Buck.
Buck sticks his tongue out. “I call dibs.”
“You can’t call dibs on a person, Evan. Do we need to have the ‘people aren’t objects’ talk?”
Buck’s hold on Eddie’s hand tightens, like Maddie was about to pull Eddie back down. He has never been more happy to be in the middle of a sibling war. Or… to be called dibs on? Eddie doesn’t know, but his heart is fluttering, and that traitorous warmth is rising in his cheeks.
Buck is a great roommate. And then he starts kissing Eddie.

Summary
It’s just them, standing too close together, in a kitchen neither of them recognize. “Sorry,” Buck swallows, gaze roving over Eddie. “I just don’t know what to do anymore. I don’t even know where to start. It’s like my brain has shut off, and nothing makes sense anymore.”
“It does that,” Eddie says lightly, “yours has been working overtime.”
Buck huffs, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. Maybe it’s an inopportune time, but Eddie can’t help but feel lucky to see him this way. Unguarded. Real and alive and looking at Eddie like he’s hearing him for the first time. “You make sense, though,” he says, quietly, like a secret, “even when you’re not here, not speaking to me—you make sense.”
Eddie has always wanted to stay.

Summary
Maybe this time Buck won’t make him let go. Maybe Buck will put in his notice too, glue himself to the hood of Eddie’s truck, and forcibly start up his roadtrip playlist.
Tentatively, Buck rests his hand on Eddie’s, interlacing their fingers.
Maybe Buck will wait around for months in Eddie’s house, telling everyone with ears that he’ll come home soon, it wasn’t a proper goodbye. Maybe he’ll chase after him, like Eddie did with Shannon, following his heart into another city, hoping for even a glimpse of what they once had.
Eddie leans closer. The truck creaks, and Buck’s leg tenses, but Eddie can only see Buck.
Eddie drops Buck off after dinner.

Summary
Buck wants Eddie to smile like this every day, all the time, so it never becomes only a memory. Buck wants to keep it to himself and never let anyone look at Eddie again.
“Eddie,” Buck sighs again, because it’s the closest he can get to I love you. The lights turn to green, and Eddie turns away. “You fucking sap.”
Buck plans to spend the week showing Eddie how much he loves him. Apparently, Eddie has the exact same idea.

Summary
“Well.” Eddie hums. “I want to talk to you.”
Buck hides his smile against his shoulder, rolling his head to look up at the sky. The stars are a bit more visible tonight. He has to squint, and he’s not entirely sure what he’s looking at, but it’s nice—knowing that he and Eddie are looking up at the same sky. He can almost pretend they’re here together, sitting side by side in the camp chairs, miles of space, but still needing to press their knees into each other.
“I want to talk to you too.” Buck replies, equally as softly.
Eddie leaves for Texas. Buck sees him everywhere.

Summary
“Oh, fine.” Natalie replied. “A little warm for fur, isn’t it?”
“It’s faux. Don’t get any ideas about red paint.”
“Hm. Okay.” Natalie nodded, then sucked in a breath. “So, you’re a lesbian, though?”
Lottie straightened and shut the fridge door, then turned back to Natalie. She had a bottle of water in her hand. “Don’t be reductive, Nat, I could be bisexual.”
“…are you bisexual?”
Lottie looked at her like she was stupid. “No, I’m a lesbian.”

Summary
The conversation moves on. Buck orders another shot and laughs on cue and remains silent. He might as well be invisible. Nobody has asked him a question in forty-five minutes—
“So, what do you do?” The Hot Priest turns to Buck, gentle brown eyes filled with curiosity. The table falls silent.
“Uh–” Buck stammers, disarmed, “I run a store. Or, well–a coffee shop. A cafe.”
“Cool,” he says like he means it, and Buck kind of believes he does.

Summary
And here’s the thing. If Buck was paying just a little more attention, he probably would’ve clocked what the pain in his middle meant a lot sooner. It wouldn’t change the outcome, sure, but he’d at least be ahead of the curve.
The worst part is that it’s all rather obvious in retrospect, because the signs are all there. The flickering lights. The gymnasium air rippling and warping like heat off pavement. The dark patches on everyone’s suits and dresses.
He should’ve seen it.
But all he sees is Eddie. Everything else is just white noise and set dressing.

Summary
Buck had once told Eddie the universe was screaming at him. Truthfully, he should have screamed back.
What a cruel joke, Eddie thinks, hysterically. Take me instead, your fight is with me.
Buck & Eddie get stuck. They have a lot of feelings about it.
