The tiles are cold where Keith slumps down against them. Nails digging into his palms, an attempt to stop the violent shaking that tears through his whole body. His vision of the cabinet door in front of him shakes, panic and terror and grief swallowing him whole.
He knows how panic attacks work. He’s far too familiar with them at this point in his life. That doesn’t make them any easier.

His gaze flickers up to Occtis’, taking in the way he seems to be attempting to breathe, before sliding down along the soft skin of his neck, clavicle, the slit opened up along where his sternum should sit. Julien presses deeper, feeling along the edges until his whole hand seems to be swallowed inside.

“My Abuela said it,” Silvio insists. “She said you have to wear the hat, because you have a pale ass so you’re going to get skin cancer and die before Lance even wakes up.”
Keith looks between the children and the hat, too confused to glare, sweaty and horrid from pulling weeds beneath the scorching sun. “What?”
“That’s wrong,” Nadia complains, and yanks her brother down to her level to whisper the correction in his ear.
“Ooh,” Silvio amends. “Tía Veronica said you have a pale ass. My Abuela said you’re gonna die.”
OR
When Lance is fatally wounded during their final battle, the blue lion enters a deep hibernation with Lance inside. Unsure when or if he’ll wake, Keith is forced to wait and watch over him in the company of the people he fears most: Lance’s family.

Lance’s posture has gone from somewhat respectable to bad to worse, and his attention span is slowly but surely reaching its breaking point, when the door in the back of the room slides open.
Blue and gray and black. Long, dark hair. A familiar set of eyes. The same faded scar carved along his cheek.
Lance jerks upright, nearly jumping out of his chair.
“I’m filling in for Kolivan.”
The words strike right through Lance’s sternum. And he didn’t even have his defenses up. He didn’t have time to prepare.
Although somewhere deep down, he knows that no time in the world could’ve prepared him for seeing Keith again.
