16 years have passed since the Battle of Hogwarts and the Wizarding world has gained some semblance of peace.
Draco Malfoy is no longer the hot-headed boy he was during the war, but has matured and faced his dark past. However, Draco's growth is tested when occult-like murders rock the DMLE and he is asked to return to England to assist in solving them.
Hermione Granger is still haunted by the ghosts of her past. She works for the DMLE as a rune and ward specialist, but she harbors resentment towards the Ministry of Magic for its lack of progress following Voldemort's defeat.
What happens when Draco and Hermione are assigned as partners to solve the murders? Will they be able to place their differences aside and catch the culprit before another Dark Lord emerges?

Murder in Hogsmeade! Draco read the headline, then the article, knowing that The Daily Prophet was mostly speculating on the death of the child. He had been the one to find the boy, had been the one to capture the supposed murderer. Draco had been in the right place at the right time, or maybe it was the wrong place, wrong time. Because of it, the dead boy, he is speaking to Granger again after over ten years. Draco Malfoy, father, head of the ancient Malfoy Apothecaries, still mourns his beloved wife. But suddenly, he hears Astoria's voice more, and she's telling him to endear himself, again, to Hermione Granger. Would something like a child's murder bring him something worth living for after his wife's death?

Summary
Lord Malfoy has been working for the department of mysteries since the Battle of Hogwarts in May of 1898. He proved his worth as a spy and double agent, and has been roundly celebrated as one of the Golden Quartet. Draco has never been satisfied, however, that the fifth member of their group was hidden from the public, and even less satisfied that no one in magical London has set eyes on Hermione Granger since the day after the battle, when she disappeared from St. Mungo’s.
Now, in May of 1910, the muggle King Edward VII, has been killed by magic and Lord Draco Malfoy finds a surprise awaiting him when he consults with an expert at the British Museum while on the trail of the killers.

In the honeymoon period after the war, many make new decisions for their future. Harry Potter is on the fast track to becoming a talented Auror. Ron Weasley has started training to become a professional quidditch player, working at his brother's joke shop until he's scouted. Ginny, Luna, Neville, and Hermione have all agreed to return to Hogwarts by personal invitation from Headmaster Minerva McGonagall. One final year to help students heal, adjust, and settle back at Hogwarts; to finish the last year they never had.
Hermione Granger is on the train, eating pumpkin pasties with Ginny when she realizes why Professor McGonagall was so desperate for them to return. Splashed across the pages of the profit, she reads the words, "Student Rehabilitation Programme to take place at Hogwarts this fall." The moving picture sends a swirl through her stomach, turning the treats sour in her belly. Draco Malfoy and his friends are to return for their "eighth" year as well. Not by choice- but by mandated Ministry order.

She was wearing one of her neat, buttoned-up outfits as always; brown herringbone trousers and a silky cream blouse that covered her from throat to wrist, her hair braided around her head but not quite as neat as usual. He stopped several feet from her and frowned. “Why do you smell of smoke, Granger?”
“Does it really matter, Malfoy?” She skewered him with a glare, arms folding across her chest. “Perhaps I took up smoking.”
“And did you?”
She gave him an ‘are you mad?’ look. “No, I burnt down my office,” she said exasperatedly, as if it should’ve been obvious, and he tried to refrain from giving her an ‘are you mad?’ look in return.
