Mello is very paranoid, he thinks the mafia could come after them at any moment (even though they’ve already been presumed dead after the explosion). So they’re about to move out in the early morning, mostly as a safety precaution.
Halfway there, Matt thinks he sees something, but he’s so exhausted that he can’t make out what it is… until they drive right over whatever was there.
Or: They’re driving down the highway in the middle of the night, and Matt accidentally hits an animal. He feels a little guilty, and that causes them to take forever to get there.
