Neither of them know shit about taking care of children, but they do it anyways, learning as they go -- snapping at and then guiltily consoling a kid, somehow managing to pick apart squabbles before they happen, surprising the entire flock with strawberries, which none of them had ever seen before -- except for Praline, and Jackal still doesn’t know how she manages to haggle so many treats out of the shopkeepers.

"Urianger," she repeats finally, and he hums in affirmation. "Would you wash my hair?"
For some reason the request - made in a hoarse whisper - makes his chest ache for her like nothing else has thus far. He makes his way over, noting how she keeps clenching and unclenching her fists so he takes her hands in his, slowly rubbing his thumbs over her wrists. He imagines he is cradling the flame of her soul and holds her hands as tenderly he would that, never wanting to see it snuffed out.

She is an amalgamation, this she knows. A gestalt of voicemails and holovids, of messages on a screen and words crooned into a phone. Memories bundled into memory, fed into her like silicone into a mold. He is pouring data into the core of her-- what some proponents might call a soul, these days-- in the forlorn and pointless hope of one day being able catch sight of a flicker of true recognition in her eyes.
She has not been programmed to pity, but she feels the thread of it nonetheless: it must be the sentience catching.

Aghast, Hades stepped back. “No.”
“An interesting response. How long has she been coming in here?”
Hades went tight-lipped, but loosened under those blue eyes. “Several months.”
“And yet all you’ve spoken about is Greek mythology. Hmm. Well. At least you’ve scored yourself a nickname. That’s quite something.” Hythlodaeus fumbled with the cinnamon. “What about her? Did you give her one? The look on your face says no. Strange. I expected a man with your undeniable charm and good looks to be a veritable god speaking to customers—or crushes. She is a crush, isn’t she?”
He narrowed his eyes at Hythlodaeus. “Has anyone told you you’re insufferable and annoying?”
