Summary
To Shoto, the meaning of preservation was a matter of self, of keeping his secrets and enduring.
To Hizashi, preservation meant remembering. It meant keeping a watchful eye, ensuring that no one around him was struggling to keep their head above water.
To Eri, once the word had been broken down for her into more understandable terms, it simply meant “to keep.”
But to Shouta—to someone whose life had been broken into such clearly-defined periods where that word had meant every possible definition… Preservation, Shouta thinks, doesn’t mean anything at all.

"We don’t need to kill,” Fukuzawa said over the com, ever calm, and Dazai heard it in his earpiece, the surety. Ranpo had a way out. Fukuzawa would have allowed it if there was no other way.
“Osamu. Shoot.” Mori’s voice crackled through and it was silence and screaming all at once—a sound he had not heard in an age. That tone, the initiation. He didn’t even breathe as his muscle twitched and fired. There’d been a head there a moment before. Now he was just looking into a skull, shattered into a million pieces.
The blood dripped down his cheek and it was so familiar, so crushingly familiar, that seeing out of both eyes was dizzying.

“You heard what I said, shitty Dazai. He doesn’t want you. Not a single one of them does, but I do. So you’re going to fucking stay here, because you don’t get to leave me again.”
“I’m not participating in this weird ass fantasy where we spend the rest of our lives together. I’m not him and you know it,” Dazai bites out, renewing his efforts to get out of his bindings.
Nakahara’s hand shoots out to pin him against the couch and stop his movements. “I know. Of course, I know that. But he owed me, and now he's fucking dead so you’re the one that’s going to pay on that debt. So, I am going to fucking keep you and when the times comes, I’m going to be the one kill you. You don’t have anything waiting for you out there, and you know it.”
Finally, Dazai stills. He tries to formulate a response, but he's not stupid, and there's no denying the truth. Slowly, he nods, and from above him, Nakahara grins.

Summary
Aizawa Shōta has never needed anyone in his life. Other than Oboro of course, but that goes without saying.
He's always wanted to be a hero and save kids who have never had the benefit of an actual childhood. Like him.
He's been able to manage his life until now. The only problem being his dad's drunken bouts, but those were just part of the routine. He's had one friend his entire life and everything after middle school was supposed to be easy.
Meeting the blond-haired boy before the UA entrance exam just messes everything up.

Yamada Hizashi never had many friends either. They all came and went and were always a little intimidated by the large house he lived in.
He hadn't really wanted to be a hero until his mom put the idea in his head. His take to first aid may have encouraged him too.
He felt like he was slowly losing control of his life. And his hearing! The people in middle school bullied him for it and he has a tough time trusting the people around him. But he knows the top hero school in the world will definitely be different.
Meeting the cute guy that was all hard stares and snide remarks just cemented the belief in his mind.
