Will couldn't read the expression on Mike’s face, hell he could barely look at him. Tears began to actually leak out of his eyes and all he could do is slowly nod his head. “I am so sorry Mike, I just couldn’t bring myself to ever tell you. As much as I wanted to, I was afraid to ruin our friendship. But it’s okay. I will get over this crush. It was really about me learning to accept myself anyway. I see that now. Please don’t be mad.”
Will was trying to calm himself. That was the truth right? Self acceptance. Will was looking down, fidgeting with his hands when Mike’s next words came out and Will’s head shot up so fast he was pretty sure he’d have whiplash.
“Was it only a crush?”

After Will comes out it forces Mike Wheeler to be honest with himself. What was really going on in Mike's head during season 5. Will is convinced Mike can be just his Tammy, until he isn't.

Will Byers has two problems:
1. His sister is catastrophically obsessed with indie rock band Paper Halo.
2. Paper Halo accidentally hit him with an SUV.Now Will’s stuck with a ruined bike, a bandaged hand, and Mike Wheeler, exhausted frontman, professional over-apologiser , and owner of the most unfairly sincere eyes Will has ever seen — showing up at his house to personally replace the damage.
Which would already be complicated enough.
Unfortunately, Mike seems determined to keep looking at Will like he’s something worth memorising .

”The issue is that he could hear me, Vick.” Mike emphasised. “He could hear me, and realise I’m actually a loser, and ride away on the back of that dumb jock’s motorcycle-”
“C’mon, Mike,” Vickie interrupted his rambling with a teasing sing-song tone, bunny teeth glinting past her pink lips. “Valentines is a day for the brave. Besides, what’s the worst that could happen?”
Or, four times Mike Wheeler sends the cute art teacher a candy-gram for Valentine’s Day, and the one time he doesn’t need to.

Summary
The summer before college, Mike and Will move into a tiny studio together, ready to start their next chapter — only to discover their across-the-street neighbor has a very public, very active sex life. Their weekly “observations for research purposes” are all jokes and commentary…until one night the neighbor brings home a man, and something in Mike shifts. Suddenly the bit isn’t so funny, the spiral is very real, the lines start to get a little too blurry, and the curiosity feels a bit too personal. Will’s head turned then, slowly, and it was hard for Rose to understand how he still couldn’t actually see her, when it felt like he was staring straight through her eyes and directly to the back of her skull. “Rose,” he rasped, and her blood crystallized in her veins. This was not her father’s honey-sweet voice. It sounded like gravel running through a rock tumbler. And he never, ever called her just Rose, unless she was in big trouble. “You need to run. NOW.”
