“I really am fine,” Jim says. It’s just a cold”

There’s an odd sticking sensation in Spock’s throat. His concerns are logical. Jim’s earlier statement was not entirely true – Jim is his, his captain and friend. He would see him in good health as consistently as possible for both personal and professional reasons. They face so many dangers, have been put into peril so many times. It is irrational to assign morals to the universe, but it seems unjust that this uneventful stretch of deep space between missions should be marred with a virus. Jim needs the rest.

“I would prefer you to be more than fine,” he says simply, condensing the tumult of his thoughts into one clear objective. “I will assist you.”

2025 Philon Award Shortlist Nominee in the Novella Category

“Are you suggesting that we’re all disobedient children, Mister Spock?” Kirk asked, mock offense slipping off the syllables before he might have even affected it. His eyes were too alight with the spirit of mischief, mood sifting through the weariness of the day and settling, as it most often did, toward the sprawl of some hope.

When several ensigns go missing following an exploratory mission on a new M Class planet, Kirk and Spock beam down to retrieve them. Unfortunately, very little goes according to plan.

Or: Stranding is a very real possibility when transporters are as sensitive and fickle as they are.

Spock struggles with his sexually repressed upbringing when the blood fever hits. (Pretty standard K/S Pon Farr story, self-indulgently focusing on the aspects of it that push my buttons the most. I have no shame. Spock totally does, though.)

What might have happened in This Side of Paradise without Leila around?

"Jim." rumbled a voice at his shoulder, rich and smooth as melting caramel, enveloping him in a sweet and lovely embrace. "You see it now. I can feel it."

Spock. It was Spock. Of course it was- to be without him would be to be limping along missing a limb. The smile that was building momentum in Jim's chest spread, pushing against the muscles of his cheeks, feline and enormously pleased with itself.

Spock, Spock, Spock! His heart thudded frantically, joyously. When he finally turned to see his companion, it soared like a bird breaking free of a cage, swooping his feet off the ground and filling his head with giddy nothing.

“Hey, if we get out of here, let’s go to a museum on our next shore leave. Have you ever seen da Vinci's notebooks?”

    “I have not.”

“I'll take you,” Jim vows, “We'll find out where they are and we'll go there.”

When yet another away mission goes awry, Jim and Spock are left stranded on a hostile planet with nothing to do but talk. What follows is a conversation about art and literature, life and death, love and friendship.
