Summary
It’s April, the school year finishes in three weeks, and Professor Quentin Beck has already covered the core content for his Intro to Neurorobotics class for the semester. He finally has the freedom to lecture on his own personal research, he’s almost made it to vacation, and he can now start to teach on subjects he actually has some interest in, not showing college sophomores how to teach a computer to play tic-tac-toe.
This year has tried his patience, but he was in a pleasant mood today.

It all happens at once, a blur of movement, action without conscious thought.
Illuga takes hold of Lohen’s wrist and twists. It’s quick and violent and effective—a question Lohen must answer in a fraction of a second: drop the knife or suffer. Drop the knife or bear witness to his own ligaments tearing.
Lohen gasps, letting the knife slip from his hold. It buries itself upright in the dirt, and when Illuga wrenches him downward, Lohen goes to his knees beside it.
Illuga wants to pretend he doesn’t need their secret trysts. Lohen’s not fond of pretending.

Summary
Not for the first time, Illuga thinks there must be something wrong with him. Maybe he’s been possessed by the Wild Hunt. Maybe the kuuvahki is finally getting to him; one too many mandragoras, or something like that.
Either way, there has to be a reason. Why else would Illuga keep letting Lohen into his bed? Why else would Illuga allow Lohen to use his body again and again, leaving Illuga with bruised skin, aching bones, and a weary heart?
‘Friends with benefits’ is a phrase he’s heard before, and it makes sense. The life of a Lightkeeper can be cold and lonely, so it’s only natural to seek warmth and comfort from another. But Illuga never expected to find himself in such an arrangement, if what they have can even be called that. Lohen’s rough treatment offers no benefits, and they certainly aren’t friends. Illuga doesn’t even like him.
This can’t possibly be what Flins had in mind when he suggested that Illuga take up a new hobby.
