The truth is that Nefer once thought blindness was a complete darkness, though she now knows that it varies. She had opened her eyes once — perhaps directly to spite Lauma’s mandates — and saw only flickers of light, concentrated where Lauma stood. And this split her chest with a horrible ache; the absence of what they once had, and the absence of moon’s beauty shining back at her.

Summary
The first thing Lauma knew was pressure. She was born over a crowd, her first sight a room bent on its knees. It was a strange thing, to reconcile the feeling of drowning from the height of a pedestal; it shouldn’t have made sense, but all she knew was pressure still.
Lauma was not a god, despite the claims. She thought of pressure, and then her eyes snapped to Nefer's hands. The weaker part of her thought of tantalizing release.

These seemed important then, but as of a day and a half ago, there is no evil anymore, and there’s no use for any of these things, even though his hand is still on his damn sword.
He doesn't know how to answer. He hardly knows how to breathe; the air fills his chest like there’s been a sudden change in altitude, like his lungs were built for the murky viscosity of impending cataclysm, and he can only gasp on the breeze’s sudden lightness. The only answer he manages to squeeze from his scattered mind is, "The important parts."
