“The only person who’s been here more than you is me,” Mary said. “And I’m not even sure that’s true.”
Stede’s heart had been pounding, and he’d been searching for a way to say no without ruining the show, and struggling to find one, when Mary had offered up the last push that had gotten him to agree:

Summary
Two years ago, Ed met a stranger that would quickly become his entire life.
One year ago, Ed kissed Stede, determined to keep him in his life.
Today, Ed wakes up to Stede hovering over him, and, briefly, his life flashes before his eyes.
“What the fuck?” Ed says before his brain is even fully online, the words coming out thick and groggy.
“Good morning,” Stede greets him. He’s pushed up onto his elbows, face impossibly close to Ed’s. It gets impossibly closer in the next beat, ducking in to give him a kiss.
This is familiar, and Ed smiles when he gives him a kiss back.
Stede’s smiling when he withdraws from their kiss, then. His hand, cradling Ed’s skull, smoothes down to cup his jaw instead, thumb brushing through his beard in tiny, absent sweeps.
“And happy Valentine’s Day,” Stede murmurs to him.
or: Stede and Ed celebrate Valentine's Day, give each other gifts, and dance around saying, "I love you," until they literally can't anymore.
