Summary
“You watch him a lot,” Kanata comments softly as they look on at the pirates. They’re quite a distance away — far enough that they probably won’t be spotted, or assumed to be a trick of the sun flashing off the tops of the waves if they are.
Souma tears his eyes away from the small figure of the lilac-haired pirate. “He interests me,” is all Souma says, like that’s all this is — a passing interest. There’s a strange heat thrumming beneath the surface of his skin that speaks otherwise.
Kanata gives him a look that seems all too knowing. “Why did you choose him to save?”
Souma can’t meet Kanata’s eyes. His eyes land on that distant figure again — warm, brown skin and lilac hair. A voice that sounds too much like Kaoru makes some snide comment about fate in his mind, and a voice that sounds too much like Kanata’s affirms the opposite. Souma tries to remember what his thought process was — but the memories slip from between his fingers, stolen in the swirling of the storm, and all he can say is, “I do not know.”
