"One of the many drawbacks of living in a haunted house was the inability to shit in peace."
This is a story of what would happen if Betelgeuse decided to haunt Lydia once again, despite her being a middle-aged widow with a moody stepson. And her late husband possibly came to watch. Movieverse, sorta cartoonverse if it was gory, we don't talk about the musical.
It is set in 2012 and to paraphrase Hitchcock, starts with a pointless death and is followed by rising tension. It explores a plethora of themes focused on patchwork families, loss, toxic relationships, mental health issues, and personal responsibility vs. responsibility for others. We're not only grieving after people, but also after lost chances and choices that cannot be undone.
Romance angle/love triangle/rectangle, beetlebabes angst longfic with a semi-happy ending (depending on your interpretation). More serious than straight-out dark. TW inside - hope you'll enjoy.

Lydia has a long list of problems and isn't keen to add more to it, but when Betelgeuse starts appearing more frequently warning her of his vengeful ex-wife, well...clearly she needs to do some thinking about the company she keeps. Lydia is taken down a dangerous path as she tries to reconnect with her daughter in the midst of a mad woman's schemes, a teenage psychopath, and man she can't put in a box in the back of her mind anymore.
Basically a rewrite of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice but there's less plot holes and the bad guys are actually fulfilling their potential.
* Also disclaimer, any attraction between our two main characters is when Lydia is an ADULT. Same for Betelgeuse, he just wanted his green card and went about it in the worst way possible, it's just weird and gross to ship kid Lydia with him, or imply he's been in love with her since she was a child.
