With Jacob there were expectations. A silent, obedient wife who will not be the last one for her husband to take. A mother of many, born dead or alive, that would fill her womb with every passing season.
The expectations had been branded into her skin until they welted up red. They had been carved deep into her bones, poisoning the marrow and hollowing her out. Laying heavy upon her shoulders during the day and deep within her heart at night. That became routine, became her life, until she felt as if she had drowned. “I told you I know what I want.” She cupped her hand carefully against his cheek, and his eyes fluttered shut as softly as birds’ wings, his body swaying. “So what do you want?”
“I’m— too old for you,” he forced out, hoarse.
“I don’t care.”
“I’m a fuckin’ mess.”
“Who ain’t?” Marie brought her hand up to cup his other cheek. His beard, thick and coarse and warm, still damp from the shower, bristled against her palm.
Logan’s hand came up to graze hers, but he didn’t pull her off him, just sandwiched her hand between his palm and his face. Keeping her there. “I screw up everything I touch.”
“Yeah, ‘cause I don’t know how that feels,” she whispered.
