Summary
“Is he your boyfriend?” The child of the pit bull’s family asks.
She’s sitting off to the side in a light blue folding chair, and Samira guesses she can’t be older than fourteen. Her big blue eyes watch Jack as her left foot bounces impatiently for her father to return from the car with the dog's extra leash.
The mother looks embarrassed and opens her mouth to apologize, but Samira is quick to reassure her.
“He wants to be.” Samira smirks and licks another chunk of cookie dough in her mouth. “I’m taking my time to decide.”
“You can do that?” The teenager looks uncertain. “The boys at my school are so impatient.”Bookmarked by buzzcockss

Summary
"The first floor is the main level of the hospital—the quiet heart of it all. Easy to access, simple for visitors to reach, and tucked away from foot traffic. Where worried families pace slow circles into the tile, waiting for updates that could potentially shatter them or piece their world back together. Where the gift waits for them, shelves filled with flowers, cards, and teddy bears meant to bring comfort when nothing else can, and down the hall, social workers’ offices sit, ready for difficult moments and hard conversations. Where a small chapel waits nearby, offering a quiet space for visitors to pray—or simply just hope for a miracle.
It’s the ground-level anchor that keeps families tethered to the earth, so stress and grief don’t sweep them away entirely.
It’s also where she and Jack leave their eight-month-old baby each morning, dropping her off at the daycare nursery and heading into another twelve-hour shift that’s made worth it by seeing her smiling face at the end of every day."
Jack needs a reminder of why he keeps coming back, so he heads to the first floor.
