Azul is invited to return home for his aunt’s baby shower. He expects it to be a stifling visit full of cheek-pinching and unwanted fuss. Instead, he finds himself falling into a trap set specifically to capture merpeople.

Summary
Kalim says look, a butterfly, and you turn your head warily, searching, so you can keep a respectful distance from it, but he throws his little hands out and says, “Don’t move, you’ll scare it!”
You freeze; as his hands reach toward you, your blood goes ice cold despite the high afternoon sun. A dread, alien chill settles in your little bones like nothing you've ever felt before, and out of the corner of your eye you sense the drowsy fanning of the butterfly’s wings.
It's perched in your hair, directly over your left ear.

I won't actually inherit anything for a long, long time—hopefully anyway! Dad's still young, and pretty healthy—but I have to start somewhere, it doesn’t really matter where. But. Uh. My parents are also a little old fashioned in that they absolutely insist I… start a family.” The horror must show on your face because he rushes to assuage your disgust. “It’s really not as bad as it sounds! It’s not forced-arranged or anything, I’m not being like. Sold off to the highest shareholder or anything! Haha! But, y’know. Mom keeps sending me Magicam profiles of eligible daughters of trusted business partners and politicians and, well. The intent is obvious. It’s really important that we like each other and get along or it could be–” (“Fucking fatal?” you would supply, if you had your wits about you to interject) “–bad, so I—we!—we do get to make our own decisions. It’s really not that bad Jamil please stop looking at me like that.”

Summary
If you're being honest with yourself, he really isn't anything like Jamil at all.
They don't act the same, they don't sound the same, they barely even look the same. Like sure, you guess that's his face and his body and his skin and his hair, but it's being worn all wrong. Jamil has never looked that casual or relaxed, he’s never smiled quite that easily before. Jamil has never been this happy to see you and he’s never been this comfortable around you.
In hindsight it's obvious, and it makes your stomach flip with shame.
Of course he’s not Jamil. Jamil never, ever liked you this much.
