“I’m… not a girl. I’m uhm, I’m a trans guy.”
The room is silent for a moment. I can see her shaking as she waits for me to respond.
“Okay! Thank you for telling me,” I said, calmly. I was a bit out of my depth here. I’ve had queer kids before, of course, but having one come out to me like this was a new experience.
She– he blinks at me, clearly surprised at my anticlimactic reaction. Should I have been more surprised? Enthusiastic? I don’t know how to respond in this situation. I didn’t want to freak him out by freaking out, but what if that was what he wanted? This has got to be a big deal for him. Do I seem uninterested? Crap!

Rocky let out a happy chirp, seemingly involuntarily. He hunched in on himself after, as if embarrassed the sound had escaped him at all, and shuffled his legs a little in the sand.
“As are you of mine.”

“Robot,” Yào calls out. “How long — how long was I asleep?”
The robot whirrs. “You have been in a medically induced coma for — one hundred — eighty — one — days,” it reports.
Yào’s not as quick at theoretical maths as Dr. Grace or Ilyukhina, but he’s pretty handy with the normal stuff. One hundred and eighty-one days is … just shy of six months. He runs the numbers again, counts them out slower in his head. It’s the same result.
It’s not enough time. It’s not nearly enough time. It’s not even enough time to be completely out of their fucking solar system.
