Summary
The United States Department of Defense thinks nothing of human mortality, yet the world in human endurance. Cloaked as a promising parent-child clinical trial, you and your mother are deceived, separated, and conditioned for "the greater good." During a particularly grueling test session, you are pushed beyond both physical and dimensional limits. As prepared as the study personnel were for death and noncompliance, no one anticipated for a retrieval mission to bring you, their only successful child participant so far, back home (and out of 1980s Hawkins, Indiana).
At the same time, the city of Hawkins quietly drowns proceeding Eleven's emergence, Will's disappearance, and a young girl's peculiar concussion.

“Don’t pout,” Max says, tangling her free hand with his. Her face is flushed with laughter, hair half-tied in a messy braid (Robin’s work, ostensibly), and half-spilling around her shoulders, a sun-strand halo. “You can just—I don’t know, you can write over whatever Eddie’s doing.”
“Hey.” Eddie draws a hand over his heart, eyes wide with mock offense. “I put my blood, sweat, and tears into drawing this masterpiece for you, Red.”
“I don’t know if I’d go that far,” Robin says, idly adding spots to a ladybug. “It’s, well. It’s a piece, for sure.”

An amazing ride from start to finish; we love found family and the unfolding of complex characters 🥹🤲💗 I have a soft spot for characters with wild potential, so seeing this portrayal of Hinata was incredibly satisfying. The divergence from canon and character explorations took my breath away. A mammoth worth re-reading again and again!
