Scarl did not imagine himself having a child in his care before his thirtieth summer. His plans with Mirayna were very precise, and they had never involved abetting the murder of an innocent woman and the stealing of her child. He couldn't have a child after Ariel anyway, not with what he now knows about himself.
(Mirayna knows her lover is a dangerous man. She isn't prepared to see it put into practice.)

It had seemed like the obvious answer when Zolf was stood in Wilde's makeshift office and far away from the potential ally they were discussing. In this brave new world of constant distrust and wariness, the week of probation followed by a visual inspection had become an understood necessity, and rarely did Zolf encounter someone who displayed more than the usual mild discomfort with the task. To put it plainly, things like modesty don't matter quite so much when facing the ever-present fear that a trusted ally may just turn and kill you in your sleep.

I found the room in the facility easily enough. It was one of many. Identical little cells with a bed pushed against one wall and hygiene equipment against the other.
There was no one else being held here. I made sure. Leaving some poor fuck here to die of starvation or run out of power was not something I intended to do. It could hold maybe twenty-five in total, but it honestly looked like it was on its way to being decommissioned.
That was probably why they'd stashed Gurathin here. They didn't think that Preservation Alliance would even know where to look.
Luckily, Preservation Alliance had me.
Written in response to the mention in Network Effect of drugged augmented humans, and subsequent discussions in New Tideland.
