Summary
Link spent every day searching for her in desperation, he needed her. He went multiple nights with no rest, and spent his days yearning and grieving his lost lover. The day he finally found her was the most cruel punishment of all. He could no longer hold her in his arms. He could no longer feel her breath. He could no longer hear her gentle voice. He could no longer feel her heartbeat. He had finally found her, but she was not the same. Link’s love did not falter, for even as a dragon, she still had all of his heart.

“I bet that some people, who fought in that war for Ace, who loved him and didn’t even know me, wish that it had happened differently.” Luffy still doesn’t look up, expression unreadable when he adds, “Sabo loves us both, but he loved Ace longer.”
If Sabo had been stabbed with sea stone, it would have hurt less. If he had burned with the Grey Terminal, or drowned at sea in front of the Celestial Dragons, it would have hurt less than this.
He’s on his feet before he’s aware of moving, seat tipping over and rolling away behind him. He can feel the steam start to lift off his super-heated skin as Ace’s fire inside him reacts to the way his heart is racing.
“Don’t say that,” he says, too loud, almost a shout.

“I’m glad you’re here,” Luffy says when the bowl is empty. He’s clearly exhausted, his limbs and the lines of his body all drooping as though his bones have all gone wobbly. He can barely sit up on his own. “Sorry they asked you to come.”
“‘Sorry’?” Sabo parrots, not sure he heard correctly. There’s a dull sort of horror blooming in the pit of his stomach like a sick flower. “Why ‘sorry’?”
“Ace had his own adventures, and I have mine,” Luffy mumbles, drifting off again. “You have yours, too. I don’t want you to miss them. I don’t want you to miss anybody. Or to… be here when you’d rather be…”
“Luffy—”
“Free,” Luffy manages. “Sabo’s supposed to be free.”
