“Well, kid,” John says quietly. “What are we going to do now?” Like he actually doesn’t know the answer. Like he doesn’t care. Like he wants Jim to make the decision for him. Like he wants Jim to shoot him. To kill him. To rip him bloody and gorge on the pain he inflicts in return for brutally shredding Jim’s fragile barely formed life.
Jim clutches the shotgun with sweaty palms, grimy fingers catching on the hot metal, itching for the trigger.
“I don’t know,” he coughs the words out around a tight ball in his throat.

At the end of the movie, Jim makes a different choice.

Summary
It was almost endearing, how thick Jim was. How his simple mind had never even considered the fact that someone like him, a red-blooded man in the land of the free, could become the victim of something like this. That anyone might look at his long, lean body and harbor the need to lay hands on it, to pull at his clothing until he was stripped naked and vulnerable. That anyone, and more importantly a man like John Ryder, might want to take more from him than just his life.

"John's hand as it travels back down along his side is rough and calloused, made hard by violence and time and underneath it Jim's skin feels like a newborn's, vulnerable and soft. And he wants to beg Ryder to stop, to do anything to him except to touch his soul like that, but at the same time Jim yearns to be laid bare and open so he may know in whose image he is truly made."
Ryder finds Jim sleeping in the motel bed instead of Nash. And while the shower keeps running John takes everything the boy has left to give before he turns into something else.
