Summary
“ …I’m scared, “ Steven mumbles, tears leaking out of his eyes freely now, looking down at their hands, lip quivering. The admission seems to stress him, but he presses on, “ I’m terrified Connie, of what I’ve become, of what I…of what I turned into. I’m not…I’m not me, not anymore. “ he admits quietly, biting his lip, his hold on Connie’s hand tightening, not enough to hurt her, but enough for his point to be made. He was always aware of his strength around her, especially as they grew up and his powers got stronger, he was always making sure he didn’t accidentally use too much of his strength.
It comforted Connie, in a weird way, that even as unstable as he is right now, he’s still making sure he doesn’t accidentally injure her, and it leaves a warm flame settled in her chest. He’s still himself, deep down. She didn’t want him to be afraid of himself, she hates that he feels that way.
“ I understand, but you’re still you Steven. You’ve just been through so much—so many things no one should’ve never had to deal with. You’re traumatized, but you’re still Steven. “ she explains gently, bringing both hands up to hold his face, thumbs brushing tears out of his eyes.

Summary
Steven swallowed, looking out across the ocean. The sun had almost disappeared, the red sky growing purple. They thought he was happy, that he was thriving. He couldn’t be the one to pull them out of that fantasy, not when they were finally able to grow on their own. Steven forced his lips into a smile, and it felt so easy. Everyone had enough to worry about, he didn’t need to add to the list of things. No-one else should have to have to fix him.
Or...
Everyone is finally happy, growing and thriving. The Crystal Gems loved helping run Little Homeschool, and loved teaching new gems everything about Earth, and how embrace change. But Steven... Steven was struggling. Glowing pink, unstable, and unwilling to let anyone else worry about him, his spiral downwards can only get worse.

One would think that turning into a monster, being shown enough love to turn back, and sobbing your heart out in front of your family and friends would be enough to cast out every bitter, angry, awful feeling you’ve ever had.
Apparently reality is a little more complicated.
