“Please, Sylus, please! It’s me,” you said. “You know who I am, don’t you?”
His eyes locked onto yours, dark and feral, the red barely visible behind wide, dilated pupils.
“Mate,” he said.
You clung to the word like a lifeline.
If he thought you were his mate then maybe he’d listen.
“Yes!” you said, nodding quickly. “That’s right! I’m your mate. I’m yours. Just please. Please don’t hurt me.”
“Mate,” he repeated.
A pause. And then, rougher—
“Breed mate.”
