Shane treats Ilya like his most prized possession, his precious little baby—doting on him in his own way whenever they were together, even checking in on him when they were apart. Ilya, most of the time, felt he didn't deserve this unconditional care, especially after everything he'd done and failed to do, but Shane still offered it to him unquestioningly.

Shane's shoulders slumped, no longer able to bear the weight crushing him. "Fuck, Ilya. I can't…I just don't understand. I don't feel right. The weight of the words finally came crashing down. Shane felt an all consuming relief wash over him, something he hadn't felt since he told Ilya he loved him all those years ago. He wanted to feel guilty, really he did, but it wouldn't land. He knew Ilya had made this move years ago, struggling to fit into a role that wasn't shaped for him but he did it in the name of love. But Shane wasn't wired that way—he needed to feel his purpose satisfied. Was that only through hockey?
