Summary
Shane runs while the canal lies black beside him, and he thinks: maybe Irina wouldn’t have liked me.
Maybe she would’ve looked at him and seen exactly what he fears there is to see: all that restraint, all that carefulness, all the ways he kept his hands clean at the cost of her son.
Maybe there isn’t much to like in a man who loved Ilya with everything he had and still ended up with him hospitalized, begging strangers to help him get better.
Or: Shane is completely, irrevocably in love. If only that came with instructions for what to do when your husband checks into a mental health clinic forty-three minutes away.

Summary
He should be looking at the clock. Should be watching the game. Should be breathing through his nose, getting his heart rate down, considering the next shift, the next face-off, the next clean action. That’s what Shane Hollander does. That’s what Shane Hollander’s always done. It’s the great moral architecture of his life, really—pressure arrives, and he reduces it to tasks. Tie the skate. Take the draw. Make the pass. Answer the question. Stand in front of the microphone. Don’t flinch when other men call your husband something awful under their breath. Don’t chase the ref after a bad call. Don’t look at Ilya when he skates past during warm-ups. Do not, under any circumstances, let the world know where the softest part of you lives.
But the softest part of him is dead and sitting across the ice. So Shane looks.
Or: Shane Hollander and the impossible hallucinations of ghosts and grief visions.

Summary
I have spent the last few months trying to understand how a mother is meant to keep breathing after burying her child. I still don't know. What I do know is this: over the last two years, I have lost two sons, and lived through a kind of grief I did not know a person could survive. The first was Ilya. The second was Shane.
Yuna Hollander eulogizes her sons.

Summary
“You treat me like I’m made of glass, Shane. You act like I'm about to break, like I'm this close to ruining everything.” Ilya’s voice drops to a whisper. “It makes me feel like loving me is work.”
Shane’s composure fractures. “Because I’m scared!" He drags a hand through his hair, breathing harder now. "And—and so are you! You don’t have to pretend you’re not, it’s fine to say it. I’m fucking scared, okay?”
There it is. The soft underbelly. And Ilya sees it—the exposed place, the honesty, the fear—and instead of softening, something in him hardens. “Scared of me,” he says, already deciding that's what he heard.
“No,” Shane says, immediately. “No, not of you. Just scared. Of this whole situation. Of not knowing what to do, or what to say. Of messing up." A beat. "Scared of losing you.”
And it should be sweet, should land as devotion, but it just makes Ilya’s chest ache. His smile twists, bittersweet. “But maybe you’re already losing me. Have you thought of that?”
Every day, there's less of me left, he wants to say.
Loving Shane Hollander changes Ilya Rozanov's life, but it doesn't save it.
It doesn’t have to.

Summary
The irony—that it's Shane who once made everything bearable, and Shane who now makes even leaving unbearable—registers, but without bitterness now, without panic, not even with regret. The dichotomy swirls inside him, and he just watches it spin, as he’s done so many times.
Ilya thinks, with a strange, aching tenderness, that Shane was the first and only person to give his adult life shape and meaning. The first person who ever made him feel real. Chosen. The first and only person to see him, really see him.
It's only fitting, he thinks hazily, that you're the last.
Loving Shane Hollander changes Ilya Rozanov’s life.
It doesn't save it.

Summary
“You are planning to rob me or what?” He hears Rozanov call, and he can’t help but smile slightly even as he rolls his eyes, closing the door to the linen closet and feeling strangely lighter than when he opened it, reassured that he’s just trying to read into a blank page, that today doesn’t mean anything more than Rozanov doesn’t mind him being around, which is strangely flattering.
“I don’t know,” he calls back. “Don’t Russians like diamonds and fur and stuff? Where should I start looking if I want to know what my options are?”
He hears Rozanov laugh, and it makes him smile.
When he joins him in the living room once more, Rozanov tugs him down to lean against him again. Shane goes easier this time, settling into it, knowing it doesn’t mean anything other than the fact that he just happens to be the closest warm body, the person on Rozanov’s roster who filled today’s slot.

Summary
It’s not like his mom had been celebrating Ilya having a fucking heart attack. It’s just that if Shane hadn’t been such a coward, he would have told his parents about Ilya sooner, and then maybe none of this would have happened at all.
After a fluke cardiac event leaves Ilya with an anoxic brain injury, he and Shane attempt to cope with their new normal.

Summary
Shane can’t look at him. He can’t really look at anyone but he manages to lift his head and stare right back into Troy’s glistening eyes.
“I never had that advantage, Troy. I never got to take it out on anyone, for any of it. All the times I got on that ice to play some hockey and some… fuckwit idiot like Kent, or whoever was calling me slurs— whether they were gay ones or racist ones… I couldn’t just hurl them back and call it a day like you did.”
He swallows hard. He thinks he might be sick a little bit in his mouth.
“You know how fucking lucky you are? To have gotten away with it? They love you, Barrett. This team loves you! You’re fucking celebrated because you overcame this big, terrible thing but for me it’s—”
He thinks about his mom in that very split second. His beautiful, wonderful mom who’d coached him his entire life on how to be polite, how to be well behaved. How to answer to teachers the right way, to coaches, to cops to the press to the general public to his fucking teammates—
He looks away. The fight suddenly drains right out of him and he goes back to his bag.
