Summary
Realizing he loved Buck hadn’t been an instant moment, no lightning strike that hit him, catching him off guard. It was a culmination of things. Like when Buck laughed, really laughed, that unguarded sound he only made when he was with Eddie, or a jacket passed over without a word before Eddie could feel the cold. Even the way he looked at Eddie, like Eddie was saying something worth listening to, like he was interesting just by existing in the same space. Eddie had loved before, but he realized that it wasn’t the same as this. This felt different, like finally exhaling after holding his breath for years without realizing it. He understood why people called it home. It wasn’t a place, but a person, a specific warmth he had been missing until he was standing inside of it, but every time Eddie felt that warmth creep in, he was doused with a bucket of cold water. There had been the train, and then, nothing. Now he was supposed to figure out how to live without his home, standing in the wreckage of what once was, still reaching for a jacket that wasn’t there.
