Lord Diavolo stares at him evenly and speaks as if Mammon hadn’t, “I have a proposal for you.” His words echo throughout the empty council room. He leans forward and rests his face in his hands, his golden eyes searching, as if seeing him for the first time. “I would like you to pretend to be my partner.”
You can hear a pin drop. It is as if the metaphorical rubber band Lord Diavolo had stretched to its limit had shot past him, leaving the anticipation that had built to hit a wall and fizzle out in his confusion.
Mammon makes an ‘x’ with his hands. “Pause,” he sucks in a breath. The imaginary noose around his throat has loosened now that he can focus on something other than his impending execution for treason and espionage. “I’m gonna need like…” he gestures vaguely, “A lot of context.”
