Summary
Natty eyes his outstretched hand a moment longer before reaching up and grasping it tightly, and Sebastian hauls her up to her feet. Her grip remains firm when he tries to disentangle; Sebastian glances up and holds her bright, blazing gaze. “We are going to save her,” she says lowly.
Sebastian nods sharply and squeezes her hand, ignoring the sharp knot of tears behind his eyes. “Whatever it takes,” he says again.

“This’ll be such a funny story to tell your kids someday,” Sebastian mutters as Scribner drags them both by the hoods of their cloaks to the library’s entrance. “‘Gather ‘round, kiddos, let Uncle Sebastian tell you all about your mummy and daddy’s first kiss, it all started with daddy’s panic attack getting us ejected from the library -’”

Summary
“He actually likes ballroom dancing a lot. He’s never actually said any of this out loud, mind you, but I always kind of got the impression that he’s disappointed Hogwarts doesn’t host an annual ball anymore. It’s the only skill his parents forced him to learn as a child that he enjoyed and still enjoys. I imagine he’d find the prospect of a ball romantic.”
“He actually did mention ballroom dancing to me over the summer,” Poppy says - the details are a bit fuzzy, as it was in one of his earliest letters to her, but she remembers smiling into her pillow while she read it, stretched out across her bed at her Gran’s house, reading his elegant scrawl in the glow of the afternoon sun. She’s certain she can find it in the box she’s stashed all of his letters in under her bed in her dormitory.
“That would be so romantic,” Mabel says - gaze twinkling and distant, like she’s picturing the whole scene unfolding in her mind.
“Too bad there’s not a ball,” Sebastian sighs.
“Who says we need a ball?” Mabel asks mischievously. “I happen to know of a place in the castle where ballroom dancing happens all the time - eternally, one might even say.”

“There’s a - tradition. Around the school. I dunno if you’ve ever heard of it, erm - it’s - so, when a - when a couple is courting, and things are - going well, I suppose, they - they do this, er, thing -”
“Trading ties?” she interrupts.
Sebastian’s blood runs hot, and then cold, and then hot again. “Yeah,” he breathes. “How did you -”
“Poppy and Natty told me about it at the start of term,” she shrugs, and her broom rises and falls comically with the movement. “They go around your wrist, do they not?”
“They - yes. Yeah, usually - usually couples exchange ties, and - you’re right. They shrink them down and it goes around your wrist.”
“Your left wrist.” she says.
“Your left wrist,” Sebastian confirms.
“Sort of like a posy ring, right? Like a declaration of the intent to propose. That’s what Poppy said.”
He nods. His ears are burning, suddenly.
“Right, like a - yes. And there’s a merging charm, too, to seal the ends together, so - yes. A - a posy ring.”
Her brow furrows thoughtfully. “What do you suppose was the original purpose of the sealing charm? And who figured out it could be used for something like this?”

Summary
“You have to remember,” Richie says. “You have to remember, Eddie. They need you. He needs you. They can’t do it without you.”
Eddie furrows his brow. Everything about the conversation thus far has felt familiar, almost like hearing a once-beloved song for the first time in several years, but these words fall foreign on Eddie’s ears; he is very suddenly overcome with the distinct feeling that he’s no longer listening to Richie speak. He clenches his jaw against Richie’s shoulder, but does not open his eyes.
“There isn’t a lot of time,” not-Richie says. “It’s watching you. It’s coming for you. For both of you.”
The warning stirs something to life - fear, bone-deep and chilling. Eddie gets the feeling that he knows what it is, though he can’t quite grasp the memory; it slips through his fingers like sand in the breeze. The lights move faster, and Eddie does not dare open his eyes.
“You don’t deserve this,” not-Richie says mournfully. “You never did.”
“Why, then?” Eddie asks before he can stop himself.
Not-Richie is quiet for a long moment. “He needs you,” he says eventually, “and you’re braver than you think.”

“That’s bullshit,” Sebastian mutters. “Why should anyone believe they’re worthy of you when all they know is bloody drivel published in some useless gossip rag? Just because some sweaty prick knows your middle name from some stupid article -”
“No one knows my middle name,” she interrupts.
Sebastian freezes, words dying on his tongue. “No one?” he repeats.

Summary
She can hear the shower running by the time she gets home, not quite loud enough to drown out Eddie’s mostly-quiet singing - a delightful hobby he practices only when he thinks she isn’t home - and she grins to herself as she toes off her heels beside the bench in their entryway and hangs her purse from her designated hook. The apartment smells clean and the windows are thrown open to catch the cool breeze in their gauzy drapes and last pinkish-purple rays of the setting sun. There’s a bowl of popcorn Saran-wrapped and waiting on the coffee table, and the Blu-Ray player is already queued up to the Mamma Mia menu, and on the kitchen counter sits two of her empty wine glasses and an unopened bottle of red wine.
She picks the bottle up to read the label.
DING DONG, it reads in thin, looping font, THE DICK IS GONE.

Summary
Stan clenches his jaw. Hadn’t he told Mike what a mistake it would be to send Bill of all people with Eddie and Beverly a whole day early in Las Vegas? “What did you do?”
“It’s not so much what I did, but more what I allowed to h-happen.”
“Bill.”
He hears a loud, thick swallow. “Eddie and Bev got married last night.”
Silence, punctured only by the distant sounds of a slot machine further down the hall from the gate where Stan is frozen and Bill's labored breathing on the other end of the line. “Bill,” he says once he’s certain his voice won’t shake apart, “you had one job.”

Summary
Maggie received the enchanted mantel clock three days before Richie’s first birthday as a gift from Wentworth’s Great-Aunt Grace.
It’s a beautiful, ornate thing - three delicate, spindling silver arms branching out from its center, each arm bearing a sepia-tinted portrait in its thumb-sized head of Went, herself, and Richie, respectively. Maggie can tell right away that it’s hand-made - one simply can’t find this kind of craftsmanship out of any old trinket shop down on Diagon Alley - and she finds herself fighting back an absurd wave of tears as she traces her fingers over the thin glass case protecting the clock’s face, watching the way Portrait Richie silently babbles up at the hand-lettered word Home over his head.

"Maybe there aren't any such things as good friends or bad friends - maybe there are just friends, people who stand by you when you're hurt and who help you feel not so lonely. Maybe they're always worth being scared for, and hoping for, and living for. Maybe worth dying for too, if that's what has to be. No good friends. No bad friends. Only people you want, need to be with; people who build their houses in your heart."

“Is yours beating yet?” Eddie asks of Stan.
Stan raises a weary brow, pressing his fingers to his jugular. “No. Yours?”
“Why would mine be beating if yours isn’t? We came back at the same time.”
“I was mostly dead longer than you were mostly dead. Maybe it’s about that.”
Eddie scowls, and then tests his pulse point. “Nothing. Does that make us zombies?”
Stan purses his lips thoughtfully. “What’s your definition of a zombie?”
“Undead.”
“I don’t think we’re undead. We’d have to have been all the way dead to be undead. Were you all the way dead?”
“Obviously not. Were you?”
“I thought I was. Maybe I wasn’t. So, no, not zombies, just - maybe still partially dead?”
Eddie grunts, scowl now directed at his coffee mug. “Comforting.” His gaze flicks up to Mike. “What should we do?”
Mike shrugs, taken aback. “How should I know?”

He nods, gaze fixated on his knees, trying and failing to pretend like he can’t hear Leslie hiding her sniffle with a cough, briefly wondering why he ever thought the days after his impeachment would be the worst he would ever feel. “Leslie…” he trails, slowly running the palms of his hands over his thighs. There are words, there must be words, and if he finds the exact right words and says them in the exact right order, he can make everything okay again. She sniffles again - louder than before - and all the air in his lungs escapes in a long, slow breath. “You’re amazing. Did you know that?”
He sees her rear back a little, confusion written across her features. “Huh?”
“You’re amazing.” he repeats with a little more conviction than before. “You’re an amazing human being. I’ve never met anyone as smart, as kind, as passionate as you. You are the best candidate that will run for that position,” he says seriously. “If they can’t see that - it’s their loss. You are amazing.”

Summary
They watch old reruns on the couch, Jake’s arm firm around her shoulders, pulling her into his side. Blunt nails scratch lightly along her upper arm, more of a faint tickle than anything else through the sleeve of her sweater, and Amy sighs before she lets her head fall to Jake’s shoulder. She can see the corner of her calendar in the war room from where she sits, but for now it’s nothing more than a blip on her radar; oddly enough, she can’t actually remember the last time she was this close to him without sex hanging over their heads. So she closes her eyes and nestles in a little closer, letting herself revel in it, and Jake’s hand flattens against her arm as he pulls her closer still.
“We’ve still got time,” he reminds her, voice soft, barely audible over the television. She doesn’t open her eyes. “And we’ve got options.”
She nods after a moment, letting one of her clasped hands settle over his thigh. “I know,” she murmurs. “I don’t wanna think about it right now.”

Something happened half an hour ago. He’s not entirely sure what - hasn’t tried sussing it out beyond the initial bombardment - all he really knows is that he was home, on his couch, content with his Jurassic Park with limited commercial interruptions, and then it felt like the whole earth was falling to pieces and he knew.
So maybe he is sure about what happened - she’d mentioned as she left the precinct earlier that she had dinner plans with Teddy tonight. And it’s odd, how beyond his immediate concern for her, he feels his own undeniable sense of hope rising. His soulmate - who doesn’t know she’s his soulmate - is single once again.
Finally.

The sun breaks low on the horizon the morning of Prince Jacob’s birth - and far, far away, across a vast forest and a roiling sea beyond it, a lurking Duchess begins to plot."In which Jake is the prince notorious for running head-first into danger and Amy is the main guard in charge of keeping him alive."

Summary
Amy Santiago detests pep rallies.
It’s probably among the most boring, bookworm-esque things about her - which is really saying something, considering she spends most Friday nights catching up on recorded episodes of Wheel of Fortune when not competing in her highly competitive literature-based trivia league at O’Hannigan’s - but really, truly, she hates them. Hates the uncomfortable chill of the large gym (to accommodate for the 500 students packed into the stands, or so Principal Holt says), the crackling speaker blown out from years of student emcees screaming into the microphones, hates the way the marching band’s sound glances off the wall opposite where they sit in the stands, echoing back harshly to create an off-beat dissonance guaranteed to have a headache unfurling in her temples in a matter of seconds.
But most of all - more than anything - she hates the annual teacher relay race.

Summary
Her chest is heaving and she’s blinking rapidly, but she’s no longer scrambling to get away from him. “Look, there - there are bad guys, and there are villains. There’s crime, and then there’s evil. He -” she points to Jake’s phone still clutched in his hand “- is pure, unadulterated evil. Everything he stands for, everything he’s involved in, is evil. You need to let this go.”
“I can’t. Because those victims have families and those families deserve answers. And this guy deserves to be brought to justice. Him being evil is all the more reason for me to keep pursuing this. Someone has to bring him down.”
“Not you, Peralta.” she says firmly. “You’re not gonna be able to do this alone.”
“I won’t be alone, I’ll have -”
“Diaz won’t be enough,” she snaps. “He’s cunning and cruel and if he finds out that you’re pursuing him, neither one of you will stand a chance. Please, Jake,” her voice cracks, and he’s paralyzed by the desperation in her eyes. “Don’t pursue this. Drop it. Forget it ever crossed your desk. Please.”
“Okay,” he hears himself say. The desperation has not diminished. “Okay, I’ll drop it. I promise.”
(He doesn't drop it.)
