Caitlyn finally speaks, soft but steady. “You came.”
Vi raises a brow. “You texted ‘now’.”
Caitlyn studies her. “Wasn’t sure if you would.”
Vi leans against the door. “I’ve been thinking about you since Saturday. What do you think?”
There’s something bare in Caitlyn’s face for half a second. Then it’s gone and swallowed by that familiar smirk.
She steps forward, slow and deliberate, until she’s close enough to breathe Vi in.
“I haven’t stopped thinking about you either,” she says. “And I don’t know what the hell I’m doing, but… I wanted this. You.”
Vi’s throat tightens. “Then take me.”
That’s all Caitlyn needs.

The radiance of the sun’s rays that had awakened her as her body had been resting messily on the left side of Carol’s bed couldn’t compare to the radiance of watching Carol now – right there before her – writing with avid concentration and such beautiful, unwavering focus.
That particular light was brighter than morning itself.
And this precise moment was the perfect opportunity to make Carol understand even a small fraction of the happiness that awaited her in the Joining. Zosia was determined to do everything within her power to make her happy. They would try – truly and thoroughly – to show her what that future could hold.
