Summary
Light Yagami misses the notebook by minutes, allowing him to lead a normal life and eventually succeed his father as Chief of the NPA.
Following the sudden disappearance of the first L, Near is rushed into taking up the mantle and continuing his work before the world notices.
When a series of murders takes the world by storm, Chief Yagami discovers the truth behind a situation that has been developing in the background of his life for well over ten years. Together with L, they assemble the pieces of a case left behind by their predecessors.

“Are you not afraid I’ll kill you?”
Near pauses, letting the threat simmer. “Is that why you’re here? To kill me?”
The creature lets out a low, considering grumble. “Your death would cause quite a stir. It could be entertaining.”
Neither a yes nor a no. Near’s resolve grows. “You know of me, then?”
“I’ve heard your name when people die... Well, one of your names.” The Shinigami looks up, somewhere slightly above his head. “I’ve been searching for you, Nate River.”
Or, a string of heart attacks is traced back to a Shinigami who only wants a bit of L’s attention.

Summary
Mikami is late. They’ve been waiting in the Yellow Box Warehouse for hours and their guest of honor is late.
With nothing else to do and no guarantee of when he’ll arrive, the task force and SPK all decide to go out and eat together at a nearby café.
Light is certain this is all some trick, but in his defense, how could he have known to plan against a team lunch?!

Summary
Light wants satisfaction. There’s an easy fix for that; he could simply pick any person he wants among the many who want him and take them without even thinking. But that's too easy. It's all too easy. He wants a challenge. He wants L.
And L is dead.
In the midst of picturing L's hands on him, the thought of his latest adversary comes to mind. He refused to humor Light before; maybe he'll humor him now.
Fuck it. Light decides to give him a call.
